"What Beeching succeeded in doing was accurately measure individual lines to see if they were making any direct profit. What Beeching failed to do was consider if any of those non-profit making lines were needed in order for the remaining lines to continue to generate their own profits. Sadly, many were. Knock on events have always been difficult to anticipate in strict balance sheet terms."
It was on a BBC Rail travel documentary I must remember this for later or I'll forget.
